Minimalist Challenge
1) This photo was taken last year in April. The crescent moon phase was 4% and had 2% illumination. The clear clean dry skies of Arizona made this shot possible.
The rest of these are brand new.
2) Dragonfly. We visited a company that specializes in water features, so I knew there would be a great chance for a photo to meet this months criteria. The metal sculpture is of a leaf and it was easily blown in the wind. Timing the was biggest challenge.
3) Brush on Canvas. Take a 24 x 36 canvas outside on the deck, and place a paint brush on it. Stand on the bench and aim the camera straight down.
4) Shapes. During dinner tonight I was thinking of shapes and light. I remember some 9 x 12 foam pads of different colors, and I began to think, black and white....

5) Small Coffee has been done before, but not by me. This was taken this morning, and yes, I drank the coffee when I was done.

Shapes. Simple use of foam pads and painter tape.
The difficult part of this shot was standing on a chair and holding the camera above my shoulders and trying to compose the shot and focus without my shoulders giving out on me!
These are all cool. And thanks for the behind the scenes, I would have never guessed that that was how these were done. Especially the "shapes" one. I think the coffee one is my favorite.
Great work!
Thank you for looking behind the scenes! My favourite is the red coffee cup.
Nice work, Dean. Love the shadow of the dragonfly - nice bonus feature. I appreciated the behind-the-scenes commentary too. All your photos were just right. Wonder if you would add a bit of red paint (or other) to the brush that maybe has one drip here or one drip there? Really appreciate the black/white and red.
I have to hand it to you, Dean - you wring a lot out of your gear with imagination and clever design, getting an amazing variety of images with simple means. Here, I particularly love the coffee cup - barely identifiable as such. Classic effective minimalism. You're very creative. Keep feeding us your rich diet of visual stimulation!
Love the coffee, works perfectly!
Thanks for posting Dean, and added kudos for the background information.
Like others I LOVE the coffee cup image, this is SO well executed.
One question on the shot though - was the cup raised to remove focus/sharpness from the B&W background, or is there another obvious reason I have not considered?
Yes. The cardstock in overlapping and the edges are a bit worn. I wanted to make sure I could obtain a clean line as easiest as possible...meaning getting it right in camera and not dependent on post-processing.
As such, masking the cup was required in making the black, as dark as possible and the white, as light as possible using the Exposure slider.
Oh...and thank you kindly.
