Happy New Year all!.
As we head into 2023 I thought it might be nice to take a break from our monthly challenges and instead discuss what our (photography) plans are for the coming year.
I also feel that members might enjoy hearing of the successes of others, so if you have any announcements (awards, shows publications etc) we'd love to hear them.
This may be an opportunity to pitch potential projects/experiments, or mention contests you are considering etc.
As a discussion group I think it's good to become more aware of how photography impacts the lives of others, to congratulate each other on achievements and be inspired by great work and/or fresh ideas.
For my own part, my New Year's resolution for 2023 is to get outdoors more, keeping my camera close by so I'm ready when inspired by the world around me.
What are your plans/goals for the year? do you have anything on the calendar that may be of interest?
For me photography is a hobby, albeit a serious hobby. I do not run a business for the simple fact I would not get along with the owner. Given that, my photos sit poorly organized in a group of files on various storage devices. I do have 4 or 5 photographs printed and hanging as I was forced into this by my wife: “If you don’t have one printed, then I’ll just download it from Facebook and have it printed at Costco!” I relented.
My immediate need is to replace my primary laptop that has a very serious hard drive issue…as in, don’t turn it off, allow it to sleep, or reboot. If that happens, it takes about four hours to boot far enough to achieve the splash screen to Log-On. I will probably get a tower this time so I can get more bang for the buck for photo editing.
This is the first month of my “official” retirement. No more work but spending my children’s inheritance on camera gear. Possibly the next gear acquisition will be “studio” lighting. Everything needs to be small enough to setup and takedown with minimum effort and footprint.
I plan on continuing to ask myself, ”What happens if…?” Given this I think renting a T/S lens could be a fun adventure.
Last year I had 15 photo trips with most being places I haven’t visited before, and this allowed me to try out my new (acquired in March 2022) EOS R5 and RF100-500mm.
I have a dear friend who loves portrait photography and I assist him often on his photoshoots. I have begun taking ‘behind the scenes’ photos for him. It’s fun.
Thanks for your input, Dean. I replaced my old PC last year, and I continue to be amazed by the difference (in speed). I think a lot of credit goes to the M2.NVME drive and graphics card, as well as plenty of ram of course.
Keep having fun on your shoots.
I really enjoy your "what if" photography, Dean. Also, we bought a second camera so my husband could do behind-the-scene pictures and even video when we do a photo session. It's easy to put together a quick video set to music and is really a surprise for the client. Hope you had a great new year!
Nice waterfall shot!
Great topic for chewing on Alan.
This group is a refreshing place to see what some great creative minds are exploring and I hope to see more of that in the new year.
For me I am going to try and put more energy into the creative side of photography. The old saying "The duty to produce destroys the will to create" has been particularly salient to me this last year, so hope to change that in 2023.
I really love your images of the Myanmar culture and people Julian. Whilst I wouldn't denounce your desire to play with your creativity, I hope this does not impact the work we so love.
On that, I feel experimenting with longer hand-held ICM exposures on the people there could be a lot of fun
I'll taking off soon for Athens, London, Portugal and France until the end of Feb. Next year, I've resolved to make more small photo books - usually on shutterfly. Decent quality make great gifts.
Lucky you, I'm sooooo jealous. We were booked to go vacation in the UK & Portugal in the past couple of years, but Covid put paid to each attempt
Good luck with the trip, I'm sure you'll get some exceptional shots.
Thanks! I had bought tickets last year and cancelled that one.
