I like the idea but (and maybe this is just the image size) it doesn't look like you nailed the focus. This is essentially a portrait shot and in this instance you really have to make sure the eye is in sharp focus. It looks like some of the closer hair is sharp here so maybe you had your camera on a wide number of focus points, in which instance it will default to whatever's closest in the image. If you didn't already, try to put your camera onto a single focus point and really nail that eye. That should also help to get the hair softer as if falls out of focus.
