Many have heard that there is no such thing as bad light. But do you believe that? Or maybe you believe that but struggle in certain lighting conditions and just need some help with photographing in that type of light. Here are seven tips to help you photograph in any light.
As photographers, we often seek out what we consider the ideal lighting conditions. We don’t always get those conditions. We could walk away in frustration, or we can learn to adapt and maximize the possibilities for the light we have. Nigel Danson provides seven tips in this video for photographing in any type of lighting.
Danson covers a variety of lighting situations a landscape photographer might encounter out in the field and uses sample images as a way of demonstrating the tips he provides. From bright sun to dappled light to flat light, he covers what he looks for in those types of scenes. Danson talks about what types of subjects he looks for in each of those conditions.
At one point, Danson notes that one of the most important considerations when evaluating light is choosing the right type of subject for the type of light you have. For me, that was the lesson learned. Trying to photograph particular subjects under certain conditions is quite challenging, but if you match up the subject you are photographing to the type of light you have, the challenge becomes much easier.
