Of course, there is a reason such lenses are so widely used, but they are not the only option. In fact, much longer focal lengths can create equally compelling photos. Because you cannot control the placement of elements in the frame, a wide focal length can be tricky to work with, as you might end up with an overly busy image. Longer focal lengths help to eliminate this problem by letting you pick out one or two interesting elements in the frame to bring the viewer's focus to them without distraction. You likely don't need an f/2.8 lens either, which will allow you to save both money and bulk by opting for a lens with a narrower maximum aperture.
