This image relies on a single speedlight placed 2 meters behind the couple, with the zoom set to 20mm to effectively backlight the heavy rainfall and create rim light separation against the dark background. The primary technical challenge was illuminating the couple's faces without a second light source; this was solved by precisely angling the transparent umbrella to catch the rear flash and bounce it back onto the subjects like a softbox. I captured the scene using a Nikon Z6II and 24mm lens at 1/160 | f/2.8 | ISO 1250 utilizing a mobile phone flashlight to assist the autofocus in the pitch-black conditions before the flash duration froze the motion of the rain.
Post-production focused on elevating the surreal atmosphere and correcting the messy foreground. I applied Subject Masking to the couple to refine skin tones and neutralize color casts caused by the wet environment using HSL adjustments. The most significant edit involved the bottom third of the frame; originally muddy grass, I transformed it using motion blur techniques to simulate a smooth, abstract water surface. Final steps included global contrast adjustments to deepen the blacks and selective sharpening to emphasize the texture of the backlit raindrops.

full marks. I'm interested in how this was done. Was it actually raining? Or was that added later. Is the shot composite, in that the water below is a another long-exposure of yours?
The first sentence "full marks" is unclear to me. Can you please clarify? Thanks.
Full-Marks = 5-stars. "Full Marks" Definition: plural noun chiefly British : the highest possible grade on an exam or in a course. Ex: She got full marks for the coursework.
Thanks so much for your explanation. I’m glad I asked since I learned something new today 😊
Yes, it was actually raining. About 2 meters behind the couple I placed a speedlight on the ground, aimed at the umbrella. In post-production, only the water in front of them was blurred.
This image makes me smile and gives me hope in the world.
