Black Orange

This portrait was created inside a shopping mall, using a geometric LED installation as the visual anchor of the composition. The environment was dominated by warm orange tones, and I decided to embrace that palette fully. A front-facing continuous LED panel served as the key light, shaping a clean, soft illumination on the model while allowing the background to stay bold and saturated.

The styling was intentional: the skirt blends seamlessly with the orange backdrop, while the black sheer top, textured tights, boots, and deep red lipstick create contrast and dimension. Shot on a Nikon Z6 II with a 105 mm lens at f/2, ISO 200, and 1/160 s, the shallow depth of field helped isolate the subject without losing the geometric structure behind her.

Post-processing details:
I handled the edit in Adobe Photoshop, starting with basic RAW adjustments—neutral white balance, slight exposure lift, and softened contrast to preserve color depth. To strengthen the warm palette, I used a combination of Selective Color, Color Balance, and Hue/Saturation layers, pushing the oranges toward a richer, slightly deeper tone.
The skin tones were refined with frequency separation and subtle Dodge & Burn to maintain natural texture. The background shadows were selectively darkened with a luminosity mask to emphasize the geometric shapes without overpowering the subject.
I added mild Orton-style glow to the highlights to make the warm tones feel more cohesive, and applied a targeted vibrance boost to the orange midtones while keeping reds and blacks stable. Final polish included sharpening on a high-pass layer and gentle noise reduction to keep the image crisp but not overly processed.

Really nice photo!

Was that commissioned work for one of the mall shops? Or you were just randomly shooting in a mall? :D

I did a photoshoot with this model for a transport company. Her outfit was coordinated with an orange shipping container that was part of the shoot. Unfortunately, there was no parking nearby, so we had to park in the mall’s parking lot. On our way to the actual location, we walked through the mall, and that’s how this photo came about :) That’s also why I used just an LED light without a softbox, since it was all I had with me (the rest of the equipment was at the main shoot location).

I wonder if this photo was better than the actual shoot :D
