While walking along the banks of the Buriganga River, I noticed a boy searching through the pitch-black, foul-smelling water where industrial waste mixes with the shallow river during the dry winter months. He was picking up small pieces of metal to sell to nearby dockyards. I was struck by the innocence in his eyes. Like Rakibul, many children collect scrap metal along the riverbanks during the dry season and sell it to workshops for a very small price. Like him, thousands of children in Bangladesh remain exposed to hazardous work and serious health risks.
