Niflheim's Breath

I had spent years admiring the iconic silhouette of La Meije from afar, waiting for the right moment to experience it face-to-face. With no rain in the forecast, I packed my tent and sleeping bag and hiked up for sunset. The mountain, however, had different plans.

A broken tent combined with one of the most violent, unpredicted alpine storms I’ve ever weathered left me completely exposed at altitude, with the peak entirely swallowed by dark clouds. Fortunately, I managed to take refuge in an abandoned cable car nearby while the storm hammered the mountain.

Just as sunset approached, the front broke as fast as it had arrived. The clearing sky revealed this dramatic contrast: saturated alpine asters still wet from the downpour beneath a vibrant alpenglow sky, while cold mist drifted across the granite faces like the breath of Niflheim itself. I spent the next hour in complete flow, moving across the slope and capturing a reward that felt hard-earned.
