How to Use Natural Light [NSFW]

Natural light photography is sought-after in lifestyle, fashion, lingerie, and many other photography genres. Anita Sadowska takes us through how she uses natural light in her small apartment and what decisions you need to make when you plan on using natural light.

Sadowska challenges the sensor on her Canon 5D Mark IV by sometimes shooting back-lit photos, and the end result made for some great images. I would've graded the colors differently and find hers a bit too orange, but this can also be due to YouTube, the MacBook Pro screen I watched the video on, or even just personal preference.

When doing this type of setup, you need to know where the light will be during the shoot and make sure everything is in place for it. Sadowska shot these images with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens lens to be able to go wide enough and give the photographs some context. This lens is one I also use, and I must say it's one of the lenses you can get rather close with while getting nice and wide, too.

In conclusion, you should plan the day and know what shots you want to get. Even if it's a cloudy day, if you have a window, it'll soften the light that enters, which can even give you a better, softer light. I love natural light and even prefer it over setting lights up in studio. How do you use natural light?

Disgusting; couldn't watch. The model looks like she's on drugs or something.

You need to be around more people that are on drugs lol. Drug addicts look nothing like this. She looks great.

I was referring to her gestures, not her appearance. Having three adult children, I've been around too many people who were on drugs. Thankfully, that was years ago. :-)

The video footage is slowed down not real time #facepalm

Irrelevant to my comment. Not sure what "#facepalm" means. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"Not sure what "#facepalm" means" This right here is reason enough to to dismiss you. Also, the fact that you have clearly never seen anything shot in slow motion and can't understand what is going on. Welcome to the internet though, go check out Youtube and be sure to comment often!

And yet you didn't. Thanks. Write back when you grow up. :-/

gestures ? they are for effect. You are talking through a hole in your head.

Whatever their purpose, I find them disgusting to look at. I'm stating an opinion, as are you. The only difference being, I'm not ridiculing yours. smh

LOL? I'm confused as to the part where she looks like shes on drugs, and the part where shes discusting - please explain!

Her gestures are exaggeratingly slow and, to me, disgusting. She looks like she's high. Of course you're free to disagree; it's just my perception. Maybe I'm too old but I don't think so. Nobody moves like she does in the video. Nobody!

shes moving slow for the camera thats taking pictures - because they are stills LOL - its not a music video lmao

Okay. That being the case, I think it looks disgusting. I also don't like liver and onions or alcohol. I'll allow you your preferences without comment.

Some people will complain about anything! Disgusting? That's nuts.

I like to know who I'm talking to. There's only one photo in your profile. So your taste in photography is okay but mine isn't. Got it. :-/

Says someone who has zero photos...

My comment was in reference to the subject of his one photo, not the fact there was only one. I like to look at people's photos to get some small insight into their point of view. Yours, for example, point to someone with a lot of curiosity but a short attention span. The fact you still list a website that doesn't exist seems to back that supposition.

Thank you for the entertainment. You clearly have a lot of time on your hands.

I'm very efficient. ;-)

I know a troll when see one, later days, you just get off on this stupidity.

You can choose to comment or not; reply or not. If you're waiting for me to agree with you, that's not going to happen. In the same way, I have no illusions regarding your actions.

Boy you are funny, I pity you that this is all that you have in your life. Troll and is a sad place isn't it? TTFN troll....

Curious, you bash me for only having one photo when as near as I can tell you have none. It must be sad to live the way you appear to. I really pity you.

It says I have an opinion of how it looked. I didn't say she was disgusting or that she was on drugs. The fact you don't want to allow me my opinion says something about you as well.

I think you might find that the slow movement was a video effect call "slow motion" or Slo-Mo.

That makes sense but I still didn't like it.

disgusting yes, i could not watch it more than 8 times, ok maybe 9.............dam, 10.....................

Well, if that's the sort of thing you like, I'm not surprised you liked it. :-)

never once in the 26 times that i watched that video did i say "that girl is on drugs". i did see that it was not going at "full speed" so it made her look like she was moving slow. or maybe it was just time going slow when i was watching it for the 27th time.

And again <sigh> I didn't say she was on drugs. I said it looked that way to me. I didn't like it...you did. :-)

even after watching it 42 times it doesn't get old.

LOL!

Crikey.... obviously Sam has never worked with models. They move specifically because they know you are shooting stills and they are giving you extra time to set up your composition and get the shots you want. And it's obviously shot at a high-frame rate for slo-mo purposes. Such ignorant commentary on Sam's part.

I'm ignorant about lots of subjects but liking or not liking something has nothing to do with ignorance. You seem to be a little ignorant yourself. Welcome to the club. :-)

I dont think that the model is disgustingly, the poses just reflecting her personality and maybe some vodkas?

Sadowska is promoting her business, what I dont like is her attitude.
I know everything - no other alternatives.

"...and maybe some vodkas?" :-)

It's slow motion Sam. The photographer and the camera strap are all on drugs too as they move unnaturally slowly :-)

I understand. It was an intentional "look", however it was achieved, and I find it disgusting. To each their own. :-)

Yeah but that's different. Wedding photos and video are supposed to look like a fairy tale. I doubt this video was going for that and, if so, it didn't. Honestly, my comment shouldn't have garnered as much attention as it has. I commented on the video, which is the point of the comments. If someone wants to say they really like that style, or something to that effect, they should do that.

Wait, are YOU on drugs?

I'm diabetic. Sometimes I experience an "insulin reaction". The gestures and motions can easily look like I'm drunk or on drugs. Diabetics have been pulled over and even arrested by police in such a state. Can you see the difference between looking like you're on drugs and actually being on drugs? Perhaps English isn't your first language? I'm not sure what everyone else's problem is.

Stop feeding this troll

Ironic on two levels.

This body spray stuff is being way overdone. I've seen it pop up more and more in lingerie and even outdoor fashion shoots where the photographer doesn't have a MUA. It screams lazy and unprofessional. Case in point, the body spray dripping down her legs and totally uneven, as well as it being smudged all over the wall.

I don't think we should use the word disgusting or drug addict. These terms are totally inappropriate. If you have kids, you should be more careful about how you respect other people and their work. Sam I am not trying to attack you but, why are you so angry at the work? If this is how you react to respectful photography work then what is your reaction when you come across the newsstand with adult magazines?

I can see how my response came off as angry but I'm not. Having said that, I didn't find it particularly respectful or not respectful. I appreciate tasteful nudity but I think a lot less of it is tasteful than someone else might think. I have no use for pornography but I don't think this falls into that category nor was that the basis of my reaction.

I see nothing "NSFW" about this work, I have seen women dressed like this in Walmart, only they only think they look good. As far as all the complaints, they only wish they could do work like this. Also, if you go to the women's section of a department store you will see life size posters of women dressed just like this, modeling lingerie in public view for all to see, shoppers employees male and female.

I agree it's on the safe side of "NSFW" but that's certainly not my issue nor did anyone else imply that. I do think, however, it's probably not a good idea to assume people's motives. I, for one, have no desire to photograph fashion/boudoir/etc.
