Three Die at Party for Instagram Influencer After Dry Ice Is Poured Into Pool for 'Visual Effects'

Three people have died and seven more were injured due to being poisoned at the birthday party of an Instagram influencer. It is believed to be from dry ice thrown into the pool, which caused the poisoning after having been used to create visual effects.

Russian influencer Ekaterina Didenko was hosting the party when disaster struck, with the dry ice mixing with the pool water. The victims include friends Natalia Monakova and Yuri Alferov, both 25, as well as Didenko’s husband, Valentin (Valya) Didenko, 32. The influencer took to Instagram, posting to her one million followers in order to confirm their deaths, which were caused by carbon dioxide poisoning. Other injured guests had chemical burns.

Initially, Didenko was posting from hospital, reporting that her husband was in intensive care, seemingly unaware he had passed away. A mother of two, she says her daughter has been asking for her father. It is believed her husband was the one who poured the dry ice into the pool with the intention of creating a visual effect.

Dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) creates heavy vapor when it meets water, but particularly in poorly ventilated areas, such vapor can cause high carbon dioxide levels in blood.

Is it not common knowledge of what dry ice is made of,that it can kill you or how much it can damage your skin? Maybe it's just what my physics/chem teacher instilled in us when we messed with it in school and that wasn't even a great school. But I suppose education differs around the world, and the general public might not know or they just don't care. Ignorance kills, and while it's a terrible tragedy for those there that lost their lives, it's a lesson that people can learn from not to be so flippant with things like this.

Okay, I'll agree with you on some of your points. However one should know that a product that is -109.3 degrees should be researched prior to using. Sucks people died but if someone would have taken less than 2 minutes to search google they would have known the danger. Took longer to go get the dry ice then looking something up. Ignorance is bliss, hate to say but you just can't fix stupid. If this article was about a IG influence who feel to their death off the cliff trying to get the best shoot for the million followers, what then would we all say other than "Oh Well" should have known better not to take such risk. When you can make money doing nothing other than stupid shit on social media, well you can't expect such people are all that intelligent. Sure I will get back lash about such statement but the truth hurts.

Will she snap some funeral pics for the gram.

Should it help her mourn and overcome the emotional distress she must be in, as a single mother of two, having lost the maybe love of her life... so be it !

That being said, sincerely, from the deepest of my heart... Why on earth do we care and who are we to judge her acts ?

As Pierre Dasnoy mentioned a few posts above, CO2 is heavier than air and it would have been accumulating and displacing breathable oxygen at the pool's surface, where perhaps only the people's heads were above water right amidst a dense CO2 layer.

It is colorless, odorless and can cause "dizziness, confusion and loss of consciousness" -- not good things to happen when you are in a pool of water.

The presence of various gases is tested for in industrial environments before people enter confined spaces.

I know that it is a boring subject, but all of you who do stuff like this for work,
Risk Assessment is not only a moral obligation but a legal one!
If this is something that is a weakness in your business model then please seek advice and training. Mega important.

Ok, seems like knowledge isn't a thing for IG "influencers". It reminded me of a recent article about teens almost getting in the train accident while taking the picture. If it that difficult for people to add some smoke effect in Photoshop, Photoworks, Lightroom or whatever other editor, that they have to put their lives on the line? It's sad to see what people can do to get more likes.

This is very sad news, it's a lesson about loss, love, genuine mistakes taking a huge human toll.

The thing that comes to mind is that awareness to help and show that it's dangerous is done by Fstoppers here and that's a gesture towards love of others, whoever we are reading the posts.

And feeling the sadness and distress of this woman. Love ... Care... Be kind... and it reminds me of this Socrates Civ technique.

Whenever we have something to say let's pass it through the 3 Civ's.

Civ 1 : Is it True from all viewpoints
Civ 2 : Is it Useful for the person
Civ 3 : Is it Kind

Should the information pass the 3 Civ's... it's worth writing, should it not... why even say it ?

Reality will win. Political correct will die.

I shot a pilot for HBO, we had extras laying on the ground in a cemetery set. Laid out the ground fog from nitrogen tanks, same as dry ice. The director delayed calling action. The extras starting getting up frantic and breathless. One didn't get up, we rushed in and the medic revived her. I cant believe that video of the group jumping into the pool. clueless, Don't be the stupid one, you have to watch out for yourself.

Especially when somebody is paying you and willing to risk your life for their own benefit.

Dry ice is CO2. Nitrogen tanks are... nitrogen. But yeah the result is the same.
