What Spot Metering Is and When to Switch to It

Your camera decides how bright to make a photo by measuring the light in the scene, and it gives you a choice of how much of the frame to measure. Most of the time it reads almost the whole frame and evaluates the scene as a whole, which works well for ordinary, evenly lit scenes. But some scenes fool that approach badly, and that is where spot metering comes in. It is the mode that tells the camera to ignore everything except one tiny patch and expose for that. Knowing what it does, and the handful of situations where you should reach for it, will rescue a lot of shots that would otherwise come out as silhouettes or muddy gray.

What Spot Metering Actually Does

Your camera's light meter can read the frame in a few different patterns. The default on most cameras, called evaluative or matrix metering, reads the entire scene in zones and tries to interpret the brightness pattern intelligently, often weighting faces, the focus point, or recognized subjects rather than simply averaging everything. Center-weighted metering reads most of the frame but pays the most attention to the middle. Spot metering does something far more selective: it measures a very small circle, usually somewhere between 1 and 5 percent of the frame, and bases the exposure on that tiny area alone, completely ignoring the brightness of everything around it.

That selectivity is the whole point. When the thing you care about occupies only a small part of a scene that is otherwise much brighter or much darker, the broad metering modes get pulled around by all that surrounding light and expose the subject wrong. Spot metering lets you point at exactly the part that matters, your subject's face, a backlit bird, an actor under a spotlight, and tell the camera to get that one thing right and let the rest fall where it may.

The One Thing You Must Understand: Middle Gray

Here is the catch that trips up everyone who tries spot metering without understanding it. Like every metering mode, spot metering does not know what it is looking at. It assumes that whatever you point it at should come out as a medium tone, a neutral middle gray that reflects about 18 percent of the light hitting it. It then sets the exposure to render your spot as that middle gray.

For many subjects, that assumption is workable, but it is not automatic. Skin tones, foliage, pavement, rock, and other natural surfaces can all sit above or below middle gray, and even light skin often meters brighter than a true mid-tone. The important thing is to know whether the spot you choose should actually render as a mid-tone, and if not, which way to push it. But it falls apart when you meter off something that is clearly supposed to be very bright or very dark. Spot meter off a white wedding dress and the camera will darken it to gray, underexposing the whole shot. Spot meter off a black tuxedo and the camera will brighten it to gray, overexposing everything. The meter is not broken; it is doing exactly what it always does, trying to make your spot middle gray. The fix is exposure compensation: when you meter off something that should stay bright, add exposure; when you meter off something that should stay dark, subtract exposure. The most reliable approach is to meter off a genuine mid-tone in the scene, which needs no compensation at all.

Where the Spot Actually Is

There is a practical detail that catches a lot of people, and it varies by camera. On some bodies, the spot metering area follows the active autofocus point, so it measures wherever you have placed your focus. On others, including many Canon bodies, it is fixed near the center of the frame unless a specific custom function or pro-body feature changes that. Check your manual, because this single detail changes how you use the mode.

When the spot follows the focus point, you get a real advantage: you can put your focus point on an off-center subject and meter and focus on it in the same move, with no recomposing and no exposure lock needed. That is faster, and it sidesteps the small focus error that recomposing can introduce at wide apertures, which makes it the easier way to work when your camera offers it.

If your spot is locked to the center instead, or any time your subject is not in the middle of the frame, the technique is to meter and recompose. Point the center of the frame at the subject, lock the exposure with your camera's exposure lock button (often labeled AE-L), then recompose to the composition you actually want and shoot. Locking the exposure is essential, because if you do not, the reading will change the moment you move the camera off the subject. Many photographers find that shooting in manual mode with a fixed ISO sidesteps the whole issue: take the spot reading, set your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO to match, and the exposure stays put no matter how you recompose, with no lock button required. The one catch is that manual mode with Auto ISO does not lock the exposure this way, since the camera can still shift the ISO as you reframe.

When to Switch to Spot Metering

Spot metering shines in scenes with a lot of contrast, where one important part is lit very differently from the rest. A few classic cases:

A strongly backlit subject, like a person standing in front of a bright window or with the sun behind them. The broad metering modes see all that background light and darken the frame, turning your subject into a silhouette. Spot metering on the subject's face exposes the face correctly and lets the bright background blow out, which is usually what you want.

Snow and bright beaches, where the overwhelming brightness fools the broad modes into underexposing, leaving you with dull gray snow. Spot metering off a mid-tone, or off the snow with positive exposure compensation added, keeps it bright and white.

Stage and concert lighting, where a performer is lit by a spotlight against a black surround. Evaluative metering tries to brighten all that darkness and blows out the performer. Spot metering on the lit face nails the subject and keeps the background black and moody.

Small subjects against a very bright or dark background, like a bird in flight against a white sky, can also call for spot metering, as long as the subject fills enough of the spot and you can keep the spot on it. The subject is often too small to influence the broad meter, which exposes for the vast background instead and ruins the subject. Spot metering gives you a better chance of reading the subject itself rather than the background. The moon in a black night sky is another case, though again only if the moon fills enough of the spot; if it does not, the meter still takes in a lot of black sky and overexposes the moon, so manual exposure confirmed with the histogram and highlight warning is often safer.

When Not to Bother

Spot metering is a precision tool, not an everyday default. For most ordinary, evenly lit scenes, evaluative metering is genuinely better, because modern versions are sophisticated and getting the reading from the whole frame is more forgiving than balancing a single tiny spot perfectly. Spot metering also demands more of you: pick the wrong spot, or forget to compensate for a bright or dark subject, and you will get a worse exposure than the automatic mode would have given you. Broad landscapes with light scattered all across the frame are usually better metered evaluatively, since there is no single small area that represents the whole scene. Reach for spot metering when a specific, important part of a high-contrast scene has to be exposed correctly and the rest can take care of itself. The rest of the time, leave it off.

The deeper habit worth building is to stop trusting any single metering mode blindly and start reading the histogram to confirm your exposure after the shot. Metering modes are just different ways of guessing, and spot metering is the most precise guess available when you know exactly what needs to be right.
