I was covering a story about Flagler Street, the main commercial street, in Downtown Miami, trying to visually capture the sights, sounds, smells and tastes one might experience were one to spend a few hours exploring this unique stretch of urban real estate, when I came across James Kendrick playing his accordian, shot this photo and dropped some coins in his cup after he finished playing. He thanked me and we started up a conversation. He told me he was an Elder at a small church in Overtown and that his daughter brought him down to Flagler St. everyday in the morning to play and picked him up a little after mid-day to bring him home. I used a Nikon F camera with a Nikkor AI 50mm f/1.4 lens and Tri-X film. Later while editing the work for the story it struck me how strangely reminiscent the image was of the work of the W.P.A. photographers during the Depression era. Although taken in 1992, it could easily pass for an image taken in the 30's or 40's.
