This image is one of a series of photographs taken inside Krome Detention Center (U.S. Immigration & Naturalization) Miami, FL on assignment. Following reports of overcrowding, detainee abuse, both sexual and physical by guards and other complaints a journalist and I were given access to the facility where we spent the better part of a day interviewing and photographing inmates as well as staff. The facility houses both male and female inmates, women often being accompanied by their small children (at this time children were not separated from their mothers). The image depicts illegal Haitian immigrants in the cafeteria. Shot with a Nikon F camera and Nikkor AI 50mm f/1.4 lens, it was made on Tri-X film.
