Jorge Valls-Cuban Poet

I was covering a story about three Cuban ports living in exile in Miami for a local newspaper. Jorge Valls was one of them, recently arrived in Miami after spending 20 years incarcerated in a Cuban prison. I visited him in his home taking various photographs as we spoke. For this particular shot I asked him to stand against the wall next to a large mirror in his living room. Using the natural light streaming in through a large bay window in the dining room to his left, I placed a large white reflector to my left to fill in the shaded side of his face and made this image on Kodak Tri-X film.
