Bald Ibis Stranded in Hessia

The bald ibis is one of the rarest bird species of the world. They were extinguished around 1700 in Germany. A couple of years ago a group of enthusiasts started a rearing program in the very southeast of Germany (Burghausen) pretty close to the village were I was born. They used light aircrafts for a flight training program including guidance of the birds on their first flight towards their winter destination. This year something went wrong and a group of bald ibis opted for the wrong direction towards the north of Germany instead of heading towards Italy or Spain. One of them, Carlotta, left the group and stopped her journey right in front of our house here in Hessia in a small nature reserve. This photo is not a portrait of Carlotta (I didn't want to disturb her when we saw here yesterday), but one of her relatives in a nearby zoo.
