Extinct

The Aurochs (Bovis primigenius) once upon a time lived in Africa, Asia, and Europe before it was gradually extinguished by human beings - as way too many other species. The last cow died in 1627 in Poland. About one hundred year ago a zoologist called Heinz Heck came up with the crazy idea to start a breeding programme with the goal to recreate the extinguished aurochs race. The result of these efforts is called Heck cattle. On the surface they look like the long gone aurochs (to a certain extent), but you can´t recreate what has been wiped-out in the past. This specimen of the Heck cattle lives in a wildlife park close to Frankfurt in the Rhine-Main area of Germany.
