"Torre Calatrava"

The Torre de comunicacions de Montjuïc (Catalan "Communications Tower of Montjuïc"), also known as Torre Telefónica or Torre Calatrava, is a television tower on the Barcelona Olympic site.
The 136 meter high tower was built in 1991 for the Olympic Games that took place in Barcelona the following year. It stands at the Plaça d’Europa on Montjuïc, a mountain in the southwest center of Barcelona.
The client of the tower was the Spanish telecommunications company Telefónica. The executive architect was Santiago Calatrava, whose style is clearly legible. Much more than its function, it is the architect's achievement and its significance as a work of art and symbol that defines it.
Its shape is intended to be reminiscent of an athlete carrying the Olympic flame. At the foot of the tower there is a water basin, the base itself is made of reinforced concrete and seems to adapt this motif with its wave-like elements. The building is completely white and the transmitter system is covered with smooth metal panels.
