Cranes are Dancing

We visited the Maasai Mara North in Kenya in November, 2024. The Maasai Mara North area is a tribal grazing area owned by the Maasai People, which has been converted into a conservation area. Just after sunrise we encountered a group of three Gray Crowned Cranes. One of the birds began to an elaborate courtship display of wing flapping and vertical leaps. The other two birds followed suit. It was an amazing show that went on for over twenty minutes in the golden early morning light. The birds were far too intent on each other to pay any attention to the vehicle or my camera.

I took the image with a Canon EOS R5 Mark II with a Canon 200-400 F4L IS USM 1.4 EXT lens, f6.3, ISO 640, 1/1250 sec, 420 mm, handheld.

Beautiful Birds! Great action shot.

Hi Jon, Thanks!

The national bird of Uganda. I had the privilege to observe and photograph a mated pair and their chick. It was fascinating! https://jonreedphoto.smugmug.com/African-Adventures-2024/Africa-2024/Uga...

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the link to your website.

You have some outstanding images, and not just of the Gray Crowned Cranes!

I particularly like the image of the spotted hyena snapping at a White Backed Vulture on the fly. I would crop it down a bit, focus on the hyena and the vulture, and post it to your portfolio page. Photo of the day material!

I am curious what camps you visited on this trip, and how was the guiding?

Again, great images!

Cheers!

Hi Robert... Thanks for the kind words. I'd be happy to share my agenda info via email if that's ok with you. I'm interested in yours as well. As you know, once you go to Africa, you have to go back.
