Towering Toadstool / The King Bolete

Another belly crawling earth hugging view into the wonderful world under the canopy of mushrooms. This mushroom is big, one in this patch was has huge about the size of a canned ham. The title I chose is a little contradictory in that “toadstool” an old-world term/word referring to a mushroom thought to be inedible or poisonous, King Boletes are some of the more choice wild mushrooms you can gather.

It’s hard to believe that it was only in 1969 mushrooms and fungus finally received their own natural history kingdom of Fungi, up till then they were included within the umbrella grouping as non-flowering plants.
