Quickly Create a Double Exposure in Photoshop

The art of creating a double exposure has become increasingly popular recently. Here is a quick tutorial on a simple way to create a double exposure in Photoshop.

A double exposure is basically the combination of two images to create one. Originally, a photographer would shoot two exposures over the same portion of film. Now, you can create a double exposure in-camera on most DSLRs. If you want the most control, however, this technique can be mimicked in Photoshop. In this tutorial from CreativeLive, Jesus Ramirez shares how to create a double exposure by primarily using blend modes.

In the video, Ramirez has two completely different photos. The first is a model’s headshot taken against a white background. The second is a wide-angle photo of a city. Ramirez’s goal is to superimpose the city buildings over the model. After selecting the proper blend mode for the image, he then demonstrates several options to adjust the images to work well together.

Creating a double exposure can produce stunning pieces of art. The key, as always, is to practice and master the method you choose to use. If you are interested in learning this quick Photoshop version of the technique, view the video above.
