Matte Painting for a New Generation of Filmmakers

Today, video content creation has become more accessible than ever. YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok, and Instagram Reels mean everyone is creating video content. With the rapid advancements in technology, creators have the power to make videos anywhere and inexpensively thanks to AI and, in particular, Generative Fill AI.

Whether you want to send someone to the moon, create an apocalyptic wasteland, or simply spruce up your YouTube background, the technology is there now, available to all, and advancing quickly. Imagination and your creative input are the key ingredients here.

One of the massive advantages of using AI to create environments is the flexibility it offers. Budgetary constraints are no longer an issue, and neither are travel or suitable shooting locations. If you can imagine it, you can create it. Certainly, that's with a few creative prompts and some time to get it just right, but the technology is there now and is only going to improve.

In this video from Epic Light Media, they go through the entire process of how to create and stylize the surrounding AI environment for your videos, providing filming guides and reasoning for certain angles in some situations and reflecting on the filmmakers of old and how they used their matte paintings. From setting up the lighting to the considerations that have to be made in pre- and post-production, the video covers and explains it all.

I found the video rather insightful and definitely worth a viewing if you are a vlogger, YouTuber, or student filmmaker, as budgetary constraints or locations may no longer be an issue in creating what you visualize. You may just have to rethink the shots to find what you are after.
