Photographing the Recent Solar Eclipse

Did you see the recent solar eclipse? It was quite a stunning sight. If you missed it, take a few minutes to watch this fantastic footage that shows the process of shooting it and the eclipse itself.

Coming to you from Astro Backyard, this awesome video shows you the process of preparing to shoot the recent solar eclipse as well as the event itself. As the video mentions, absolutely do not view the sun without a solar filter, especially through a telephoto lens, which can cause instant and permanent eye damage without a proper solar filter in place (over the front of the lens, not the viewfinder or back filter slot of the lens). During the 2017 eclipse, a lot of people used stacked ND filters or things like welder's glass, but these do not provide the same sort of protection that a solar filter does. I am quite excited for the April 2024 eclipse, as I lie in the path of totality and am looking forward to planning some interesting shots. The eclipse will be visible throughout a lot of the United States, so be sure to start planning now before the rush! Check out the video above to see some stunning footage from this recent eclipse.
