Testing the Viltrox 75mm f/1.8 Evo across portraits, concerts, landscapes, pets, and a professional shoot, Luca Petralia makes the case for why he prefers the 75mm to the 90mm. On APS-C, the 75mm gives you a 112.5mm full frame equivalent, while the 90mm pushes you to 135mm and forces more distance between you and your subject. The build uses metal and high-quality plastics, a metal mount with a gasket, and an aperture ring. The Fujifilm version he tested drops a few features the Sony and Nikon versions carry, including the autofocus/manual focus switch, a function button, and the clickable aperture ring toggle.

Autofocus is the part that needs the asterisk. On single autofocus with a subject that isn't racing toward you, the lens performs well on Fujifilm. Switch to continuous with a fast-moving subject, and the misses pile up. He traces this to Fujifilm's autofocus algorithms rather than the lens, noting that Sigma, Fujifilm's own glass, and Viltrox lenses all show the same struggle on the Fujifilm X-E5. The same lens on his Nikon Zf delivers far more consistent results with the identical autofocus motor.
The focal length choice here connects to a wider habit among APS-C shooters who reach for a fast 56mm f/1.2 or similar and want more reach and more background compression without jumping to a true 135mm equivalent. A 112.5mm equivalent sits in a practical middle ground for headshots and tighter portraits in real rooms, where a 135mm equivalent can back you into a wall. Pair that with a lens light enough to leave mounted on a small body all day, and you get a setup that fits how a lot of people actually shoot, moving between a portrait session, a concert, and a walk with the dog without swapping bodies. That flexibility is part of why Petralia brought the lens to so many different situations rather than treating it as a studio-only tool. Compression at this range separates your subject from the background in a way a 56mm won't match, which is the whole reason to add a lens like this to a kit that already has a fast normal prime.
For video, this reads as a photographer's lens that can moonlight. It's not stabilized, so you lean on IBIS or another support method for handheld work, and it shows visible focus breathing, though the long focal length means you rarely rack from close to infinity. The continuous autofocus quirks carry over, with occasional glitchy transitions and moments where it refuses to lock.
