5 Quick Tips for Photographing Sand Dunes With Michael Shainblum

Michael Shainblum creates some breathtaking landscape work and is kind enough to share his knowledge with those looking to up their game. Watch this video for some helpful tips on capturing one of his favorite subjects, the challenging yet beautiful sand dunes.

Some landscapes are easy, while others can be a real pain in the butt to capture. This is especially true if you don't show up with a plan or are limited on time, causing you to rush. I found this out the hard way a while back when I thought I just needed to show up to shoot a freezing sunrise of Niagara Falls.

In the video, Shainblum explains that while the shots he gets don't come easy, they are also not impossible. Taking your time, being properly prepared, and following some simple steps will increase your chances of success. Being familiar with the area you are shooting isn't always an option. You may find value in spending extra time scouting or exploring before even capturing your first frame. I know just the thought of some wind blowing sand onto my gear gives me the chills. Luckily, Shainblum provides some very helpful advice regarding the safety of your gear in sandy elements.

I agree wholeheartedly that getting next-level shots requires a lot more than just a fancy camera and the right location. Picking up tips from creators like Shainblum who are willing to share their experience is one of the coolest things about being a photographer today.

Dune photography is something I've been wanting to try for years, I would have done it in the spring had it not been for lockdown. I found this pretty informative, I'll have to rewatch before I'm able to go.

Thanks so much Alex!
