It helps control the literal exposure of the image, but it is arguably the exposure parameter that has the greatest creative impact, as it helps determine the depth of field (how much of the image is sharply in focus), which allows you to keep everything from front to back sharp or keep only your subject in focus to easily isolate them and draw the viewer's eye.
