Does your choice of editing software matter? Are style and substance mutually exclusive? Is film school necessary? Starting out in filmmaking generally predisposes one to having a veritable plethora of questions ranging from what gear to buy to borderline existential crises. This helpful video answers most of them (they can't help you with that existential crisis).
If you're trying to get into filmmaking, Film Riot is a great channel to follow. They take a very pragmatic and technique-oriented approach to the subject that's highly helpful for beginners and advanced creators alike. In this video, they take a number of questions from viewers, giving their perspective on a variety of topics. I particularly appreciated their take on if gear matters, which was to focus less on the equipment you're carrying and more on the people you're collaborating with. Film (often even more so than photography) is a highly collaborative art, and finding people who you not only mesh with creatively and professionally, but who also bring to the table different experiences, perspectives, creative impulses, and problem solving skills is crucial to not only achieving success with a specific project, but to growing as an artist overall. Keep good company!
