Five In-Camera Tricks Filmmakers Should Know

If you're working with video, you sure know how much time can go into getting each edit just right — time that adds up very quickly. This helpful video will show you five in-camera tricks to get the transition or effect right while filming, cutting down on your post-processing work.

Coming to you from Film Riot, this great video discusses five tricks that can be achieved in camera, thereby saving you post-production time and simplifying your process a bit. As the video mentions, a lot of these tricks are even used in Hollywood films, and if you pay attention, you might be surprised at how often you notice them. They can serve to move the action along or transition between scenes in efficient and organic ways, making them things you'll want to learn and keep in your bag of tricks. For example, as the video mentions, "Birdman" took advantage of some of these ideas to give the illusion of one uninterrupted take throughout the film. I recommend watching (or rewatching) it and seeing if you can catch some of the hidden cuts; it's a great movie you should see anyway. Give the video above a viewing for the full list of tricks!
