Retouching is an intricate thing that takes lots of practice to really get right. Whenever you are retouching people, it is crucial not to overdo it, lest you will end up with a result that looks overly artificial. I always try to practice two things whenever I am working on a portrait. First, I zoom out quite a bit. You will spend most of your time retouching a portrait zoomed in to a high level of detail, but it is important to keep checking the image at the zoom level at which it will be viewed. Second, when you are finished, take five minutes or so to step away, then come back to the photo with a fresh set of eyes.
