This image was taken in during one of the best thunderstorms Kelowna (Canada) has ever seen! It is very rare to get the "quality" of lightning (if you can call it that), that we did! The storm slowly made it's way up from the South, allowing ample time for me to setup my camera and tripod and keep snapping. When it comes to lightning, the best technique I have found is to set up a shutter speed of roughly 4-8 seconds. This ensures that you don't have to worry about missing a bolt in between shots, as your "closed shutter time" is roughly 25-12 % respectively, of your total open shutter time. If you use a faster shutter time, you'll take more shots, but have greater chance of missing a bolt in between shots. Also, you will end up with way more "empties" to sort afterwards. I used an aperture of f/5.6 and an ISO 500 to balance out the exposure from the city lights. This has become an iconic photo locally, and was one of several outstanding shots from that evening.
