This photo was taken with a Pentax K1 and the Tamron 70-200 at 150mm, f2.8 in June of 2017. As I mentioned in another submission, the Pentax K1 is one of my favorite cameras of any I have ever owned. I no longer own the K1, but frequently think about buying a used one.
I currently own a Sony a7rv, and a Nikon ZF. Both of these cameras are amazing, but neither bring me the joy I got from the K1.
This is a portrait of my granddaughter, Cayden, when she was 12 years old in 2017. My son and Daughter in Law had come by to visit us (Cayden is their daughter), and were getting ready to leave. We were all standing on the front porch talking, and I noticed that the light was incredible.
I told everyone to wait a minute, and I ran inside to get my K1 with the Tamron 70-200. I took a few pictures of the family, but Cayden, being the first grandchild, was no stranger to having pictures taken of her, and asked me to take a picture of just her.
I was happy to oblige, and moved her over to where a lot of reflected light was coming from the white paint of the porch. The way this reflected light was lighting and contouring her face - especially her eyes - was really special.
I took several shots, and then asked her to move her hand up as if she was resting her face in her hand (she actually wasn’t, as she was standing, but it looked as if she was), and that was the missing piece! It looked good in color, but was better in B&W, IMO. The K1 produces beautiful tones in B&W.
I think this is probably my favorite shot of Cayden. A large framed print of this is hanging in my son’s home. She was 12 when I took this, and now she is 20, in college, and an amazing young woman!!! Photography is so much more than just pictures of things!!!
