This photo was taken at an anti-apartheid rally on the campus of the University of Texas-Austin in 1987. I was working freelance for the Daily Texan and had my camera with me as I walked to class that day. I took several pictures and was eventually detained by campus police who thought I was part of the protest. My wrists were zip-tied and I spent the next few hours sitting with my hands behind my back on the floor of a near-by basketball court. The striking young lady in the portrait caught my eye. Like many in the protest, she wore a gag to symbolize the University's suppression of free speech.
