I took this photo at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge while walking the boardwalk near the main building. Spotting three photographers with long lenses aimed at the trees, I learned the location of a tiny, camouflaged nest. Twin beaks peeked over its crest. I waited for 30 minutes, camera ready, until the mother Rufous Hummingbird arrived—briefly, for less than 20 seconds.
