I photographed this from summit of Mount Hamilton, overlooking the southern edge of San Francisco Bay about 20 minutes before sunset. The light was soft and golden, diffused by a layer of haze and filtered through the distant coastal fog. The bay below shimmered with reflected light, while the rolling hills faded gently into one another — a natural study in soft transitions and atmospheric depth.
Shot with Sony A7R V with the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II lens at 200mm, handheld, at ISO 100, f/5.6, and 1/2000 sec. I initially considered a wide lens, but the scene had too many competing elements at that scale. With the telephoto, I was able to compress the ridgelines into clean, overlapping layers and let the soft light speak for itself.
In post, I made subtle adjustments to lift the shadows in the foreground, tone down the brightest reflections in the bay, and apply a gentle vignette to guide the eye. No artificial light was used — this was entirely natural, captured in a moment of stillness when everything aligned: light, land, and mood.
