This image was taken during a Natural History Society outing to a local quarry. Lighting was bright but overcast which is my favourite. There were quite a few people with cameras and some were using macro lenses with ring flash lighting. I am not a big fan of this type of set-up as it frequently results in images with very dark backgrounds. Sometimes this works but for me it takes away from the delicate natural lighting and has a completely different impact on the viewer and can often look like a studio shot. I prefer to use a high iso to stop any movement and with modern software this can produce excellent results. The iso for this image was 1600 and it has been fairly tightly cropped from the original file.
Camera used was a Canon 5D II using a 70-200 lens along with a 24mm extension tube.
I frequently get odd looks from other photographers but I like this combination, not just for the results, but also for the fact that I don't need to carry two different lenses but just a small extension tube. Should something present itself that requires a 200m lens is a simple matter to remove the extension tube and slip it into a pocket.
Image processed using my favourite software, DxO PhotoLab along with Nik Collection.
