Title: Face to Face
Captured in August 2023 in the plains of Maasai Mara National Reserve, this image presents an intimate, head-on encounter with a young male Lion as he walks directly toward our safari vehicle.
The photograph was taken from a uniquely low perspective thanks to a specially modified photography safari vehicle without doors, allowing a ground-level angle that places the viewer directly in the lion’s path. This perspective emphasizes the animal’s presence and strength while maintaining a respectful and safe distance.
A closer look reveals numerous flies scattered across the lion’s face, evidence of a recent meal. Lions are notoriously messy eaters, and remnants caught in the fur around their muzzle quickly attract flies, creating a raw and authentic glimpse into the realities of life in the wild.
Photographed using a Canon EOS 80D paired with a Sigma 150–600mm Contemporary lens, the scene was framed and later cropped to a cinematic 16:9 format, enhancing its impact as a wide, immersive composition suited perfectly for large wall prints. The result is a powerful portrait of youth, confidence, and the untamed presence of one of Africa’s most iconic predators.
