This winter has been particularly brutal weather-wise here on Shelter Island, NY. We’ve had an above average amount of snow and fog, due in part to the fluctuating temperatures. On this day, much of the snow on the ground has disappeared, though piles still remained from shoveling and plowing. Due to the temperature rise that started the day before, Coecles Harbor still had areas of ice, and there was a fog floating above it. I went to photograph the nearby lighthouse, but, it was totally engulfed in fog, so I looked to my right and went with this shot instead, as it is one of my favorite areas.
I set up along the shore with a Photo-Pro carbon fiber tripod and a Nikon d850 and a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens. It was shot in Manual Mode at f/8 at 155mm, ISO 100 and at 1/320th of a second.
Due to the cropping of the image, I think that it would look nice over a fireplace or over a bed, where an elongated image would fit nicely. Due to the shape, it could be a welcome addition to a room, as it has a look that is different than your standard print dimensions. The fog adds a serene element to the background as the horizon is barely discernible, and the imagery of the foreground stands out.
The main challenge faced while shooting this was the rapidly changing environment due to the fog. It was being blown about by the breeze and temperature change, so there were some moments where the photograph could be captured, and then the fog would drift, and the previous shot would no longer be available.
