Ghost of Pilibhit | Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, February 2025
How it was created
Captured on an early winter morning along the Sharda River system at Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, this image came after over an hour of tracking. The tiger was deep in the forest — then a flash of orange. Our guide knew instantly where to position the vehicle, framing the animal within the canal corridor.
The diffused backlight filtering through the forest canopy, combined with mist still blanketing the water surface, acted as a natural diffuser — creating volumetric light shafts that gave the scene an otherworldly, almost painterly quality. Exposure was carefully balanced to retain detail in the tiger's coat while allowing the misty background to glow with soft luminosity. Post-processing was intentionally restrained: subtle contrast control, shadow upliftment, and a cool-to-neutral colour grade to preserve the natural blue-grey atmosphere without over-processing the image.

Why this works as a large print
The image has enormous tonal depth — misty gradients layering from foreground water to background forest create a sense of recession that rewards viewing at scale. The tiger, while not dominant in the frame, carries perfect visual weight: enough presence to anchor the composition without overwhelming it.
This is a photograph that changes depending on how close you stand. From across the room, it reads as a moody landscape. Up close, the tiger's detail and the water ripples emerge. The wide horizontal format fills a wall beautifully, and the cool, muted palette complements most interior design sensibilities — making it as much a living-room statement as a wildlife image.
