Hello everyone! My name is Ephrem Richmond and I am slowly working on become a professional photographer!

Having landing for the first time in Florida, and having lugged around my camera EVERYWHERE, I finally found a moment in the morning to capture this beautiful shot! The sun is rising up and over the edge of the world, the water is pushing on to the shore again and again, creating these fantastic layers of salt water! The orange from the sun perfectly illuminates the sky, and bounces down the steps of ocean to your eyes.

I think this photograph would be a great statement piece for two reasons. Number one, it's simple. The subject (the sun) is clear and there's nothing distracting you eye from it. The colors are consistent across the image, so it will properly match it's according theme. Number two, it has an extremely unique motion to it. It builds up and up and up, and then it crashes. Then, slowly, everything slows back down and it uses all of its energy to spill onto the beach front. Then "crash", it happens again. You can practically feel this image pushing and pulling you; to the ocean, to the Earth, to the ocean, and back to the Earth.

The editing process for this image was simple. I did three things: 1) nothing, 2) I framed it properly, and 3) I made sure all of the existing colors were printable on Fuji Crystal. When I was out on the shore taking photos, I realize that the moment I had was perfect! The lighting was vibrant and realistic, the water wasn't too rough, and there was hardly any wind! The conditions were perfect; everything from light to wind and to people.

I hope you guys enjoyed looking at my image!

Okay! I don't understand! Why is this only getting 2 stars?

I understand your frustration with the scoring system. Most people feel they deserve better. But the important thing to learn here is that the viewer rarely reacts to a picture as strongly as you did to the scene when you were there photographing it. You were able to enjoy the entire experience... the sound and motion of the water, the warmth of the sun in your face, the smell of the saltwater, etc.

As much as you'd like to convey those feelings, it's really no more than a few square inches on an electronic device to most people. As a viewer, I'm not sensing the movement or energy that you describe. And saying it in the description does not make it so. It's essentially a flat static image, the way I see it. No, there are no real distractions, but the washed-out sun overpowers the scene. Backlit photos are tricky. The sun needs to cast a glow on the subject, not be the subject itself as you have here. Have you ever been driving a car late in the day, straight west with the blinding sun in your eyes? Annoying, right? That's the reaction I have to this photo. Detail of interest in the picture is lacking because all we have is sun in our eyes. And you need to honestly ask yourself if you haven't seen a million other pictures like this. Again, I get it.... it's disappointing when people don't validate your photography. But take it as a challenge to make more distinctive and unusual images.
