Atomos Announces Sumo, Their New 19-Inch HDR Production Monitor-Recorder

When you hear about the Atomos monitors, most of you will think about their portable small and rugged monitor-recorders many amateur and pro filmmakers use. This time they leveled it up by creating a big 19-inch monitor-recorder with exciting features many other monitor brands in this category still lack.

The size of the new Atomos Sumo is ideal for on-set and in-studio productions. This 19-inch screen provides directors, clients, focus pullers, and video editors a crisp 10 stops of dynamic range image driven by the Atom HDR engine. The monitor is rated at 1,200nit which makes the picture visible even in bright sun light.

Recording and Ports

The Sumo records 12-bit raw and 10-bit ProRes/DNxHR. It can capture HD up to 240p and 4K up to 60p depending on your camera's capabilities. It stores the recording on 2.5 inch SSDs. It provides one HDMI 2.0 input and output, and four SDI ports.

Sumo also provides balanced XLR input and output for audio recording and monitoring with dedicated meters and adjustments for frame delay and gain. Although it has a 3.5mm jack for audio speakers Atomos provide built-in speakers.

Image

The monitor can be calibrated using X-Rite's i1DisplayPro. There's a quick access to industry standard tools such as 2:1/1:1 zoom, Zebra, False Color, Frame guides, SMPTE Safe Area, Waveform, RGB parade, Vectorscope, Anamorphic desqueeze, and an option to upload 3D LUTs.

Live Switching, Monitoring, and Recording

Working with multiple cameras is a breeze. The Sumo allows you to live switch between four SDI-connected sources by cueing, cross fade, and hard cuts, while allowing you to fully re-edit the transitions later.

Power

Including their patent pending continuous power system, you can swap batteries without turning the monitor off. The Sumo switches to the second battery when the power level of the first one is low.

Build Quality

The monitor has a rugged construction aimed for professional production environment. It provides ten mounting points, a rear panel VESA mount, and an included stand for a variety of mounting configurations.

Price and Availability

The monitor is available for pre-order at almost $2,500. Shipping will start by the third quarter of 2017.
