Nikon Announces New NIKKON Z 35mm f/1.4 Lens

Today, Nikon has added a new lens to its lineup of Z lenses for mirrorless cameras. This time, it is the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4.

The 35mm focal length has been a hallmark of street and documentary photographers since its inception. Wide enough to capture a variety of scenes yet long enough to avoid significant distortion, the focal length can apply to a variety of photographic applications. So much so that, for many photographers, this is the only lens they keep in their kit.

Today, Nikon announced its latest rendition of the 35mm classic, the NIKKOR Z 35m f/1.4. Weighing in at just 415 grams and measuring only 3.4 inches in length, this lens is meant to be an everyday lens that doesn’t break the bank or the photographer’s back. With a wide aperture of f/1.4 the lens should allow in plenty of light for tricky lighting scenarios. The lens uses a stepping motor (STM) for fast and quiet autofocus in both stills and motion. It has a clickless control ring for adjusting settings on the fly. The minimum focus distance comes in at 10.6 inches. The lens is drip resistant. And Nikon is promising the new NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 will carry on the company’s recent focus on producing lenses with minimal focus breathing.

The lens is expected to start shipping in mid-July for a suggested retail price of $599.95.

So what do you think? Is the new NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 the next lens you’ll be adding to your kit?

At that price point -- it's a Sigma Art killer if Sigma ever gets around to releasing their primes on Z mount.

Actually shockingly small and affordable. I'm curious what corners had to be cut to keep the weight, length and price down.

I’m not a Nikon user and just wonder how they managed to make such a lens for that price point.

Don't hold your breath to see a canon version of this! Cudos to Nikon

The price seems too good to be true, eagerly awaiting test results to see how this performs. I hope they didn't sacrifice heavily on quality for this price point. If this is pro-tier quality at $600 it will be amazing. Though something tells me a 35mm 1.2 is coming at some point.

But even such, the Z 35mm F/1.8 costs more than this AND weighs more making this particular lens a giant question mark. My original instinct was to assume that it was APS-C, but it isn't, its full frame.
