Nikon Shares More Details on Their Upcoming Line Of Cinema Lenses

A few months ago, Nikon teased that its journey into cinema products would extend beyond camera bodies into the realm of lenses. Well, today, we learned a bit more about what shape those optics will take.

In the way that it has deployed with its last few product launches, Nikon is enjoying the mystery of the whole thing. So we don’t know everything yet. But we do know a few new numbers. The first number is in the name.

We’d seen a few cryptic images of the cinema lenses during an intentionally abstract promo video Nikon dropped a few months ago, but now we know that the new series of cinema lenses will be called the NIKKOR Z Cinema T1.9 VV series. For those unfamiliar with RED Cinema’s camera line, its V-RAPTOR [X] VV has a large format sensor to provide excellent image detail. This designation in the lens line title is to denote that the image circle produced by this set of lenses is large enough to cover the larger sensor.

That they are putting the T1.9 designation right there in the title suggests all lenses in the line will share the same T1.9 rating for consistency across the line. T1.9 is plenty fast and should serve filmmakers nicely when working in varied lighting environments.

Nikon also mentioned that there are a total of nine cinema lenses that will be part of the VV line. We now have a picture of the 50mm T1.9. They haven’t stated yet what the other eight lenses in the lineup will be or their relative dimensions. For that, the wait continues. But it’s clear that Nikon’s lens lineup is about to get a major upgrade.
