Nikon Teases First Look at What Could Be Its New Mirrorless Camera

Nikon just released a teaser video for what is undeniably a new camera. The thin form-factor, large screen-to-body ratio, and even a new exterior lens design all point to the much-rumored mirrorless camera system expected to be released at or before September's Photokina event.

The teaser video echoes a "Tron" meets "Gravity" style as individual pinpoints of light come out of a dark void to gather, multiply, and eventually converge into an image displayed on a silhouetted camera's massive rear LCD screen. This darkness, subsequent themes of amplification of light, and ending tagline, "In Pursuit of Light," all hint at a mirrorless body tuned for extremely good high-ISO performance. The only text on a matching, sparse microsite only strengthens this possibility with more references to astrophotography: "Countless rays of light come together, forming an image at the end of their long journey. Nikon's ongoing mission heading into the future: to guide light into performing superb pictures." If that wasn't enough, this text stands next to the only image so far introduced with this campaign: an image of a woman looking up in wonder at a night sky.

As the video takes us around the camera, it's clear that the body is relatively thin compared to any of Nikon's current professional SLRs and certainly lacks room for a traditional mirror (or any kind of mirror, for that matter). Continuing around the new camera, an equally silhouetted lens barrel also seems new — resembling a cross between Nikon's current designs and a smoother, Zeiss-Batis-like exterior simplicity — before it detaches from an illuminated outline of what must almost certainly be a new lens mount.

What other clues can you see in this teaser or on Nikon's new microsite?

yeah but that doesnt show anywhere. if you remember one of the video's Nikon released on the D850 showed the Night -Timelapse work in doodvaley. so only thing you can say the camera is thinner, large LCD compared to body size and big grip, not to forget that lens. lets hope they did something about video work and in body VR.

Deleted User at nikon rumors there is more info. including adapter that can use fmount lenses G and E series.

Considering that literally all (natural) light is coming from space i wouldn't push the astrophotography interpretation too much based on this video.

Maybe, but at this stage they are going to be crafting the way they word things very carefully. They could have described it in any way, but chose to double up on the space thing.

What I see is either a really small body, or a fairly large screen on the back.

Now Canon should take a page from Sony's book and release actual photos of and info about their new mirrorless full frame. Everyone would forget about this Nikon teaser overnight!

Building suspense is always a good thing. That's why the lingerie business does so well.

I wonder if Sony has something up their sleeve for when Canon finally announces and uses that same tactic. a9 II to show just how far Sony is ahead in this space?

It doesn't matter what Sony have up their sleeves. Canon will be the top FF mirrorless maker. Their huge loyal base and brand strength practically guarantees it.

The best view at 1:13 shows it's definitely a mirrorless body. Probably with some ultra low light capabilities I would guess that's close to the Sony A7s. I would also bet money that the attached lens we're looking at is a new mount.

Crudely brightened screengrab.

In case anyone else was wondering like I was, the blacked out lefthand accessory door is Nikon's doing, not a video compression artifact or something Rob did in this screen grab.

Interesting! I thought it was compression artifacts at first, but I think you're right.

Ha. I tried to do the same thing, but no doubt Nikon knew we would. Bummer. Can’t wait for more info/the release! Hoping this means we’ll see it before Photokina. They can’t tease us too long, can they?!

Photokina would still be my bet. Maybe slightly before to steal the thunder from other announcements? Worst case, it's only two months away.

Yeah...all the latest rumors have pointed to an Aug. 23 announcement for at least one of two potential mirrorless bodies. This could easily be the low-light body, and then we'd perhaps see a high-resolution body a month later at Photokina.

Raise your hand if you were waiting for Morgan Freeman to start narrating.

Looks about the same size as the X-T2! Can't wait!!! :)

This perfectly represents my experience with mirrorless cameras (3 fuji bodies; that I love, btw). DUST FLYING TO YOUR SENSOR!!!

With a mirrorless camera, Dust will be on your sensor. A lot more. Dust will feel the urge to go to your sensor. Your sensor will create a gravitational force inversely proportional to your efforts to keep dust away.

But I still love many other benefits I get from mirrorless cameras, yeah...

Yah... But like Medium Format cameras and Sony Alpha series, it's easier to clean as well.
It's not really that difficult to clean (properly) a sensor and I think more photographers should know how to maintain their equipment.

Yeah I find the same. My mirrorless Sony sensors also seem to be very effective vacuum cleaners for the air! I agree about the other benefits, but not everything about mirrorless cameras is a step forward.
