Sony Prepares Its Next Extreme Camera and Lens

Sony is preparing for a major announcement this November, promising new additions that could reshape the professional camera market.

According to Canon Rumors, this anticipated launch will introduce the Alpha a1 II, Sony’s next flagship model. Building on the original a1’s 50MP sensor, Sony is adding several new features aimed at improving speed, image quality, and usability. The a1 II’s added “AI Chip” could set it apart by enhancing autofocus and processing speeds. The introduction of CFexpress Type A 4.0 memory compatibility will also boost read/write speeds, a significant advantage for users shooting high-speed bursts or 4K video.

Sony has designed the a1 II to resemble the body of the A9 III, their high-speed, mid-range camera. This ergonomic shift aligns with Sony’s broader move to create consistent handling across its models, making it easier for users to switch between bodies. Rumors suggest that the a1 II’s price will be higher than the current a1, adding intrigue to what Sony could be including. Despite using the same 50 MP sensor as its predecessor, Sony appears to be banking on the a1 II’s advanced processing and handling to distinguish it.

The second rumored product, the FE 28-70mm f/2 GM lens, is poised to offer a sleek, professional-grade addition to Sony’s lens lineup. This lens would go head-to-head with Canon’s RF 28-70mm f/2L USM, a groundbreaking lens that set new standards for aperture and sharpness in a zoom. Interestingly, Sony’s version is expected to be significantly lighter—over a pound less than Canon’s model. Sony seems to be focusing not just on optical quality but also on usability, aiming to deliver a lens that handles easily while providing the image quality expected of their GM series.

It looks like it'll be an exciting month!

Very excited! I think it’s worth crediting the original source though: Andrea Pizzini from Sony Alpha Rumors.

Indeed, can't wait to see 28-70 f2GM. Hope to see also more tele lens like 80-150 with f2 aperature.

A 24-70 or 28-70 are aright and not to spoil a want BUT the old FE 24-240 would be a better choice to update/upgrade for it would be great for a constant F4 or even f/2.8. The range is not only to 240mm but in APS-C 360mm. OK, that is a pipe dream but if those type II lenses with the faster focus rods would also.
It is like if you have not yet used but the FE 24-105mm F4 and have not seen the macro or close up of it and the bokeh balls after the update to it and mounted on the A7RM5 after latest update, you are missing and great combo. Meaning a waste staying at 24-28mm F2, just think about usage, very limited!!
Not a portrait person but even F4 on a Sony camera will give sharp eye focus with even a blurry noise, even for night shots in a lit city, stage or even some astro stars above.
Just think what is it that is limited to a 28-70 and most all telephotos today are like prims and ISO's are less noisy meaning less need for fast glass. As Far as noise there are so many NR options in the many programs out.
1. FE 24-105mm F4 at 35mm
2. FE 24-105mm F4 at 92mm
3. FE 24-240mm at 42mm
4. FE 24-240mm at 240mm
