Why This Photographer Does Not Recommend the New Nikon Mirrorless to Professional Photographers

The new Nikon mirrorless cameras have been announced and with that comes all the opinions on who these cameras are for. Should professionals use these cameras?

In this video, Tony Northrup goes through the pros and cons of the newly announced Nikon mirrorless system. He is by far one of the best and non-biased on YouTube for comparing cameras. He compares the Z6 and Z7 to the original DSLR Nikon cameras, the D750 and D850, and the Sony a7R III and a7 III cameras

The pros of the new Nikon cameras will hopefully push Sony to improve on their system too. A mirrorless camera with the weather sealing of a D850 is a huge improvement to many landscape photographers. Let us hope Sony will do something about this in the future.

Nevertheless, as we say in Denmark, “The trees does not grow into the heavens.” Spec-wise the Nikon and Sony mirrorless cameras look very alike with only minor differences. The Z6 and Z7 are supposed to compete directly with the a7R III and a7 III. This is a bit of a disappointment to those who wanted something new.

Northrup even goes as far as to not recommending the Nikon mirrorless to professionals. As he stresses though, it is of course always up to the individual photographer to make the final judgment. Check out the comparison and preview video of the Z6 and Z7 above to hear why.

What are your thoughts on the pros and cons of the Nikon mirrorless system?

How in the Hell would they review it, LOL

I am sure this was not an engineering decision, but a marketing one. Why would Nikon enter the market, years late mind you, with the perfect camera? A perfect entry leaves little room for upgrades. I am sure the strategy is for the MK II to have 2 slots, the MKIII eye detection AF, and the MKIV will likely have a huge battery.

All manufacturers gimped their “PRO” cameras with 1 slot in first and in Sony’s case second generation (Sony A7 series, Olympus OM-1, Fuji XT) and Canon will likely do the same when their MILC comes out.

Just look at the smartphone market, sales are down because the newer phones offer very little compared to the 2016 smartphones and people are hanging on to them longer.

I think Smartphones are slowing down, because many people are not upgrading knowing that G5 is just around the corner, and you will have to get a new phone to get that service. Oh by the way, G5 is going to be incredible, it's going to be a game changer. Can't wait! But, then again, if you have money it's all a moot point.

he makes a good point. not to say you have to agree, but if you do want/need two cards, yes, Nikon should have provided this option.

I Want/Need a Sensor that never needs to change the ISO, Completely noiseless, Some day!

The fast is, dual card slots have become an industry standard (especially at a $3,400 price point). I don't understand people saying the Z7 isn't meant to be a pro camera. It is as spec'd out as their D850 plus has the same weather sealing PLUS is $3,400! Nikon waiting this long to get into the mirrorless game only to come out with strictly "prosumer" cameras wouldn't make any sense. Regardless, look at all the camera's that are $2,000 or under that have dual slots of some type. D750, D610, A7III, X-T2, X-H1, X-Pro2, GH5, G9, OM-D E-M1 Mk. II. Other than a Leica, the Z7 may be the most expensive camera to not have dual slots.

im just waiting, don't want to change all my gear, too much invested in it for now. i still can get the shots i want with my current setup and have options to fix it in post. as technology gets better, its really going to force everyone to be more creative and different. the best camera is the one that you have on you or use....

"He is by far one of the best and non-biased on YouTube for comparing cameras"

That's a biased statement....

"Don't buy a camera that hasn't even been offically released yet"

Ok, we won't! ;)

Joking aside, buy whatever the heck you want. The talking clickbait in the video doesn't seem to take into account the majority of photographers are active hobbyists looking for what is new and trending, and what is new and trending for the last 3 years now is Mirrorless Full Frame.

Sony kicked it off and made buzz in 2015 and the technological savvy among us saw the potential and made the switch, instead of demonizing it.

I worked at a high end camera store for nearly 3 years, and the one thing that always made me laugh was how often Nikon and Canon sales reps made cracked jokes at Sony for trying to be a camera company. They would go as far as saying "Mirrorless is a fad for trash photographers who dont have brand loyality".

Welp, they were half right, because many people lost their brand loyality when the wise others among us started to actually pay attention to the huge advance in tech, and began the migration over to a company that actually took a big risk to have it pay off.

Now Canon has been left with their pants down, apologizing for their lack of inovation and have limped on in making a suitable mirrorless camera that allows the to compete with Sony (but in all honestly, what they really should apologize for is their god awful lens manufacturing warrenty).

Nikon, even in their stiffled revenue and issues with production, and serious complications with supply and demand for their full frame DSLR's due to factory issues (D850 and D750 mostly), takes another HUGE gamble and invests it all into Full Frame Mirrorless, even going as far as appeasing to the Nikon fans by making it easily backwards compatible with Nikkor Lenses, AND coming out with new lenses as the 58mm 0.95 with AF, and everyones first reaction is:

"DON'T BUY, THIS IS TRASH. DUMB INVESTMEMNT"

How about some support and Admiration for once instead of stones and pitchforks? Ungreatful creatons at best, my word!

I think Its high time the lot of the older soulless vlogging photographers who gave up on technology advancement along time ago need to sit down, drink some water and rest their opinions for a while, because this right here? This is the real thing you shouldn't buy. This constant yammering going on here.

How easy people forget history and how many articles here damned Sony (just search it, probably 30 or more articles between here and Petapixel, and dozens more on YT), and said;

"DON'T! IT'S A FAD! WON'T REPLACE DSLR'S! NOT GOOD!"

annnnnnnd, here we are in 2018, and its DEFINITELY not going away.

My advice to all these so called experts consistently breaking down why its not a good Purchase:

Get with the times or get out of our feeds. Learn about buyer habits and the market before telling others it's a red flag. Adapt or die, Business 1OH1.

Stop trying to save dying tech for your personal inability to remove your horse blinders. It's just annoying at this point.
