One More April Connections

I've been playing around all week with the black and white editing technique I discussed in my previous post, from an article on fstoppers by Fred van Leeuwen. You can find the article/video here:

https://fstoppers.com/architecture/transform-your-architectural-photos-f...

This time I decided to revisit some of my old lighthouse photos from Bodie Island and Cape Hatteras on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Outer Banks is one of my favorite places on Earth. And the iconic lighthouses make fantastic photography subjects. For the 1st and 4th photo I replaced the sky with a long exposure sky from different photos I have taken. The 3rd photo is just a regular black and white edit using some of the doge/burn techniques Fred discusses. I didn't do any masking on that one.

I can't decide which one I like best. I really like the minimalist feel of the 2nd one. In reality there are a line of trees going behind the lighthouse in the 2nd one. But I love the way it looks by getting rid of them.

This is a fun technique to use for anybody interested. However, I will warn you, the masking involved can be quite tedious.

Hi Kyle,

They all are great in aspect to themselves, but if I had to choose a favorite.

"Survey says... #1."

Quite tedious? Sounds like a challenge.

Hope you like using the pen tool in photoshop!

Removing the stacked layer with the brush set to 4px in Photoshop with a mouse. I'd love to use a pen!

Your crazy! Yeah. This isn’t that tedious.

Wonderful results - I'm going to have to try that. My favorites are #2 & #4

Thank you, those are my favorites as well!

For me, the second one really stands out. Sweet!

These are great, Kyle! you've gotten the technique for sure. My favorites are 1, 2, & 4. Great subject for experimenting with this technique as well!

Thank you!
