August challenge - Weather extremes

OK, the poll is in and the challenge for August will be the capture of extreme weather.

With the current global climate this could show the results of the burning summer, moody storms etc, or perhaps a view into how the winter's going in the southern hemisphere.

This doesn't have to be literal - consider flowers dying because of drought, dried up river beds, the result of flooding etc.

This may give up the chance to climb outside of our combined comfort zones so I'm hoping you will be inspired to get out there and shoot.

I'm looking forward to seeing your work - post either here or as a separate discussion as you see fit.

As always, I'll be looking for submitted work that may be suitable for the group banner. Fstoppers uses a 'letterbox' area across the center of the image and allows for zero editing (eg cropping/moving) options so keep that in mind.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to continue with an evolving monthly theme, and would like input from you valuable group members on a fun theme for August.

To engage other members the theme cannot be too focused (eg no suggestions of black cats at night), but otherwise it can be very open.

Some suggestions;

- self portrait (as abstract/creative as you'd like....)
- results of a summer challenge you have set yourself
- creative photos taken on a mobile device
- moody images (night, rain, fog etc)

You get the gist. Otherwise we could revert to one of the group standard themes (Minimalism, Abstract, Experimental).

Please post suggestions in this discussion. It would be great to hear from some of the newer or less vocal members as all voices are important to the group.

I like your abstract/minimalist moody or self portrait idea, Alan.

Also summer is coming to an end (here in the northern hemisphere anyway), maybe abstract/minimalist sun, summer, heat/hot weather? (Of course, this can extend to those living in the end of winter as well -sun, winter, cold/cold weather).

Thanks for the suggestions Jennifer.

I like moody too.

Thanks Ruth. I'm looking forward to seeing your work again.

Just to kick things off, here's an older image of a heavy storm moving across the lake. It absolutely poured a few minutes after capturing this.

beautiful! love the depth created by the dark foreground. is this a night shot or did you convert it?

No, this was actually a straight shot taken as the sky darkened and the rain was about to hit.

Perfection!

I really LOVE the colors and depth in this image, Alan. I am a sucker for this type of moody image then with the added texture of the beach. Great post!

Thanks Jennifer!

Weather will be fun. How does this normally work? do we post one for the month or can we periodically add?

Here is one i posted a long time ago as a landscape abstract. I think it is the calm before the storm! There is a very tiny boat out there and i cant help thinking that the thought “oh s***” might be going through there minds while from so far away it looks calm! Interesting comment on perspective!

feedback welcome.

ps. it is grainy. it was dark, i am far away and this is cropped.

I think the colors are lovely, the tranquility and the colors are lovely, Ruth!

Hi Ruth, thanks for posting. The challenges are pretty easy going - just an idea to help members get inspired to try something new and see the work of others.
Post as many as you like!

Thanks for the 411 Alan!

It is so hot that we are seeing more and stronger lightning where I live.

A difficult subject well captured!

Thank you, Alan
