Kyle Foreman's picture

Bogue Inlet Pier

This maybe one of my favorite long exposures that I have taken. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to use it as I took a guess at the exposure and it was quite under exposed out of the camera. However, it is much easier to recover shadows than to try to recover highlights and I think it turned out quite nice. I also spent quite a bit of time cleaning up some hot pixels as I did not have the LENR turned on. Next time I do a 5 minute exposure I'm going to turn it back on and see how much of a difference it makes. I love the effect a long exposure has on the ocean. It almost looks like the pier could be in the middle of a desert or something.

Looks ok to me, nice shot. Lines lead into the horizon, not sure on rule of thirds and popping horizon in the middle but rule are made to bend.

Lovely image Kyle, the colors are to die for. I think the gradation from let to right really works, anchoring the eye to the sunset.
If I were to offer one POSSIBLE suggestion it might be to trim a little off the left to see if it improves the balance (I'm unsure on this) but TBH it looks great anyway.
Here's something with a slight adjustment to the balance just to compare (I'd recommend you don't go by rules but by what appeals to your own eye)

I still love this photo; great colors. The balance looks good to me, I find myself looking the right half more, but that isn't a bad thing (in my opinion) in this type of picture. I could easily see this hanging on the wall.

Really nice capture of gently-blended colors and an apparently still body of water. I could fall onto this image. Well done!

Thank you everyone for the kind words/feedback. Alan Brown I do like the crop you did. I also really like the original. I'm torn!

That indicates neither is incorrect.... just go with whatever feels right to you. I think each tells a slightly different tale.
