Falco Wyomingii

This little bird is a hybrid of a Peregrine Falcon, the fastest bird and the fastest animal in all of creation, and a Gyrfalcon. Her handler had just given her a piece of a cottontail rabbit he had killed earlier. He is a licensed Falconer from near Jackson, Wyoming and most of his birds have been rehabbed from injuries, usually involving automobiles.

Super photo. Does have a wing injury or is that just the angle f your photo? I am yet again surprised that two different kinds of falcon have bred together. One or maybe two of the owls at the Raptor Foundation are Great Horned and Eurasian Owl crosses. They can't be different species but different breeds as in dogs andc ats that can all interbreed. Is that the case?

Thank you. I don't know how the hybridization takes place. My guess is that it is some sort of artificial insemination procedure. The bird had just been making some very high speed dives and had killed a pigeon, or some other nuisance bird and the feathers were just ruffled. She was completely functional though. There is probably a strong similar genetic component like horses and donkeys though, or wolves and domestic dogs.
