I think that's one of the things I like best in shooting portraits and headshots.
All those who walk into my studio and tell me how horrible they look in pictures, and than seeing the reaction when we go over the pictures, and I show them the difference between the first shots and the shots we got later.
"I need a headshot, but i'm not photogenic"
They look great, of course depending the type of headshots you were trying to go for. The top 2 right look very nice and gives a cinematic studio feel as for the 2 bottom right feel more like lifestyle/corporate feel.

you got it right :)
the second from the top was for an actor and the bottom was was for a lawyer.
all the left sided photos were taken when we started shooting, and the right sided ones after a bit of coaching and conversation.
